The Monterey Bay Sanctuary Foundation has been coordinating a Marine Protected Area (MPA) Education and Outreach Initiative to develop MPA education and outreach products and materials for the central coast of California. The Initiative is designed to complement the work of the California’s Department of Fish and Game's plans and programs in the areas of education and outreach through a collaboration of multiple agencies, organizations and individuals. In September 2007, the 29 MPAs along the central California coast went into effect. The central California coast is important, as it is the first region in the state to implement this ambitious initiative. The north central coast is scheduled for implementation in April 2010.
As we are now in the final year of the Central Coast project, we are providing an update of accomplishments, activities and products that may be useful in your own outreach and education efforts. In addition, we are providing some of the lessons learned that may be considered in other regions as the MLPA process is implemented there. These activities have increased public awareness of and support for the MPAs and it is anticipated that these efforts will help garner political support and funding. We are grateful to the Resources Legacy Fund Foundation for funding the MPA Education and Outreach Initiative, and to all our other contributing partners.
Below we are providing links to: 1) a synopsis and links to available and completed products (e.g. handouts, agendas, and presentations) and 2) a more detailed summary of our activities to date.
