Water Quality

The Citizen Watershed Monitoring Network is a consortium of around 20 monitoring groups that monitor the health of Monterey Bay Sanctuary watersheds. It was established in 1997 and has since provided support, training, and a central forum and database for citizen monitoring programs. The Network also coordinates two annual regional monitoring events, First Flush in the fall and Snapshot Day in the spring. The State Water Resources Control Board, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the California Coastal Commission, the City of Pacific Grove, and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary have funded this program.

The Agricultural and Rural Lands Initiative: at the heart of this innovative response approach are 24 strategies that are intended to protect and enhance water quality while sustaining the economic viability of the region’s substantial agricultural industry. The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, the State Water Resources Control Board and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary have funded this program.
